How New Yorkers should decide on an Injury Attorney
If you’re the victim of a car accident, or medical mistake by a doctor or a hospital, in addition to trying to get yourself better, you need lots of information about what your legal rights are. How do you know what to do, or where to turn for help? It’s easy if you have a family attorney, or have used an attorney in the past. But what about the majority of people who have never needed an attorney? Where do you go? Whom do you call for help, and who will answer your important legal questions?
You need to start with the basics. Get the name of an attorney. Ask your friends or co-workers. Find out if the attorney has a special expertise and experience in handling the type of injuries you have. It’s a good idea to talk to a lawyer who has a great deal of experience handling injury cases. It’s not a good idea to let your real estate attorney take care of your medical malpractice matter. They’re totally different cases. If you still can’t find an attorney, try calling the Bar Association in the County in which you live. They’re always listed in the phone book. They usually have a rotating list of attorneys who have volunteered to answer questions and help injured victims. Another helpful listing is the New York State Trial Lawyers Association located in the City. As a last resort, try looking in the Yellow Pages for a name. But remember, not every lawyer advertises in the Yellow Pages, and not every attorney listed in an ad in the Yellow Pages is an expert in handling your type of case. Also, not every attorney that advertises tries cases in front of juries or actually will handle your specific case. You must ask these important questions.
Remember, the more information you have the better consumer and client you become. Your attorney should be guiding you through the legal minefield you’re likely to encounter in any claim or lawsuit. Litigation is a battle; between you and an insurance company. You are seeking full and fair compensation for your injuries. The insurance company’s goal is to save the company money. The battle is a serious one, and to win the battle and gain appropriate compensation you need as much information as possible. Your lawyer is your guide. Choose your lawyer carefully and make sure you feel comfortable with your legal guide. You should be concentrating on getting back to good health and taking care of your family. Leave the other issues to your lawyer.
